War child finds peace in new life

Ghayas “Gus” Beydoun sits with his wife, Cynthia, in the living room of their home in a quiet Erin Mills neighbourhood. A traditional Lebanese water pipe sits in one corner, and there are pictures of the couple’s five children on a side table. Gus talks softly of another neighbourhood, from another time, in which there was rarely a quiet moment.

 

Clear sky, quiet life

"Back in Sarajevo, I always had this dream about Canada," says Adnan Smajlovic, as he sits in the common area at the Living Arts Centre.
He's waiting while his daughter takes Irish dancing lessons. "We watched the series Northern Exposure. It was set in Alaska, but I drew a parallel with Canada and thought it must be the same — the trees, the clear skies, the quiet life.” Read more
